Our History

The International Association of Sapo Practitioners (IASP) traces its roots back to 2005 when it was founded by Peter Gorman, a dedicated explorer who immersed himself in the jungle alongside the Matsès tribe. Through his tireless efforts, Gorman provided Kambo samples for in-depth scientific study, significantly contributing to our understanding of this sacred medicine.

In 2017, Mr. Gorman recognized Ananya Maitri as a mentee, entrusting her with the authority to establish and advance the IASP as an educational beacon. Ananya was given full rights to develop a rigorous training program aimed at equipping students with the comprehensive skills necessary to offer high-quality healing sessions upon completing the intensive basic training.

Following Mr. Gorman's untimely passing in 2022, Ananya assumed the mantle of leadership, steadfastly adhering to his established standards and regulations. The IASP, under Ananya's guidance, remains dedicated to preserving and advancing Peter Gorman's profound legacy.

Our training program is widely renowned for its depth and rigor, mirroring the primary training protocol imparted to Ananya by Peter himself. Since taking on the role of mentor, Ananya has successfully trained over 50 individuals, and we proudly recognize 46 of them as esteemed, safe practitioners.

Rest in Peace, Peter - your spirit lives on in every practitioner touched by your wisdom and dedication.

Peter Gorman: The Grandfather of Kambo

Who is Peter Gorman?

A quick google search will render a plethora of pages that will talk about who Mr Gorman was from a multitude of perspectives. He was a writer, a noted and award winning journalist. He was an explorer who entered the Peruvian jungles in the early 80's and was the first gringo to bring medicines to North America and shared his findings with the scientific community for studying. He was a naturist, a president, a father, a mentor and a friend to many.

The love, respect and admiration he received from people all over the world is well-deserved and only goes to speak on who he was as a man. And man, can he ever tell some great stories! If you ever got the chance to be in close proximity to him, consider yourself blessed. He was an extraordinary human and if you were lucky enough to get invited to his home for a meal, understand you were in the presence of greatness! He was kindhearted, compassionate, understanding and if you managed to wiggle your way into his heart, just know you were there until his dying day.

Peter worked directly with the Matsés Tribes of Peru and financially supported them since the early 1980's. In the 90's Mr Gorman purchased the land, air, water and mineral rights of their land for them so that no one can enter and take anything without the tribes permission. His connections and ties to this tribe are solid and as our mentor, we honor that legacy and continue to remain connected and true to the Matsès tribe.

Mr. Gorman is the grandfather of the medicine known as Kambo in North America. He worked directly with the Matsès tribes since the early 1980's and as the phenomenal activist he was, he diligently brought this medicine to the light so the world could benefit from it's spirit and magic. He is responsible for a lot of the knowledge and information available today about Kambo due to submitting samples to be scientifically studied in 1989.

It is important for us to remember our lineage and honor those who passed their wisdom on to us and thus, we remain true by fulfilling the legacy of legendary Peter Gorman and carry this potent medicine with respect.

Our Mission

At The International Association of Sapo Practitioners (The IASP), our mission transcends the individual pursuit of healing and self-discovery.   It is our mission to empower those who seek to carry and share the sacred shamanic practice of Kambo with the tools needed to support their own little corner of the world and the wisdom to ensure ethical practice is a key driving force.

Rooted in the legacy of Peter Gorman and guided by the wisdom of the Matses tribe, The IASP is dedicated to the responsible stewardship of Kambo. As we train and endorse practitioners in the sacred art of Kambo, we impart not only the knowledge of four unique modalities of application, but also the imperative of conscientious care for our ceremonial spaces and the Earth by ensuring we ethically source medicines that support the protection of the rainforst to preserve the sanctity of Kambo with the hope that future generations inherit a world in harmony with nature.

We are a community of individuals who have been transformed by the healing power of Kambo and who seek to share that healing with the world, one person at a time. Through our collective efforts, we illuminate the path to spiritual awakening, environmental stewardship, and a brighter future for all.

Our Vision

At The IASP, our vision is to witness the profound impact of wise plant medicine teachers on the personal healing journeys of countless individuals.

We envision a world where these sacred medicines serve as catalysts for inner transformation, fostering love, unity, and a deepened connection to self and all life. Through the shared wisdom of Kambo and other sacred plant medicines, we strive to create a global community that embraces these teachings, leaving a legacy of healing and harmony for future generations where every corner of the Earth thrives in balance and vitality, leaving a precious inheritance for generations yet to come.
